Join Waunakee Neighborhood Connection, Waunakee Public Library, and the Waunakee IDEA for a viewing and discussion of PBS Wisconsin's documentary, Wisconsin Pride. Light snacks will be served.
(Note: We will be watching Part 2 of the documentary, "Struggles & Victories". It is not necessary to watch the first part beforehand, however, "Part 1: Hidden Histories" is available to view here.)
About the film: Wisconsin Pride invites us to witness our state’s history through a new lens. This documentary brings hidden LGBTQ+ stories to the foreground and reconsiders the long narrative of Wisconsin in light of the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people in our state.
Years before Stonewall, LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites fought against oppressive homophobia, eventually forming a movement that would score unprecedented civil rights protections. Informal networks centered on gay bars, an independent press and acts of public protest supported legislative efforts that would make Wisconsin known as “The Gay Rights State.''
Premiering on PBS Wisconsin and available for streaming online in June 2023, the documentary is a groundbreaking collaboration between PBS Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Historical Society.
The Building Connections program series is a collaboration between the Waunakee Public Library, Waunakee Neighborhood Connection, and The Waunakee IDEA. Building Connections is designed to do just that by introducing neighbors in Waunakee to each other and to lived experiences that may be different than their own. The purpose of the series is to promote community engagement, build relationships, and foster conversations – all with a goal of continual learning and growth.
